At A Glance
Ash is a 1.5-year-old Dalmatian–Golden Retriever mix who completed a 3-Week Reactive Dog Program with Off Leash K9 Training under the care of Elaine. Ash is sweet and loyal, but he struggled with selective listening, jumping, counter surfing, resource guarding, and reactivity, especially when play got too exciting and around moving triggers like scooters and bikes. His program focused on more reliable obedience, stronger impulse control, and calmer behavior in public.
Dog: Ash
Breed: Dalmatian–Golden Retriever Mix
Age: 1.5 years
Location: Murrieta, CA
Program: 3-Week Reactive Dog Program
Trainer: Elaine
Main Focus: Reactivity, resource guarding, impulse control, selective listening, jumping, counter surfing, trigger neutrality
Outcome: Better manners, improved obedience reliability, reduced reactivity, calmer behavior around triggers and excitement
The Challenge
Ash had a great personality, but his behavior made daily life unpredictable.
Before training, Ash:
- Ignored commands when he didn’t feel like listening
- Jumped on people during greetings
- Counter surfed and grabbed items off surfaces
- Showed resource guarding around food and treats
- Got reactive when play became too exciting
- Had strong nerves around scooters, skateboards, and bikes
These issues weren’t just frustrating, they created safety concerns and made it hard to trust Ash in busy environments.
The Training Approach
Ash completed a 3-Week Reactive Program designed to create reliable obedience and calm behavior in real-world situations.
Training focused on:
- Strengthening obedience reliability so commands are not optional
- Teaching impulse control and calm settling behaviors
- Improving manners to reduce jumping and counter surfing
- Addressing resource guarding with structured handling and clear boundaries
- Reducing reactivity by teaching neutral behavior around triggers
- Gradually exposing Ash to bikes, scooters, and skateboards in controlled setups
- Proofing obedience in higher-distraction environments to ensure results carry over
The goal was to help Ash stay the same sweet dog, just calmer, safer, and more predictable.
The Results
After three weeks, Ash showed major improvements in both obedience and emotional control.
What improved:
- More consistent response to commands
- Reduced jumping and improved household manners
- Less counter surfing and better impulse control
- Improved behavior around food and treats with clearer boundaries
- Calmer reactions when play escalates
- More neutral behavior around scooters, bikes, and skateboards
Ash remained playful and loving, now paired with more structure and better self-control.
Trainer Insight
Many “behavior issues” are connected. When insecurity shows up as resource guarding, it can spill into reactivity and impulse problems. When you build structure, clear boundaries, and predictable routines, dogs become calmer and easier to manage across the board.
